Communicating secrets

Today I walked into a room where two of my coworkers were chatting in English. Suddenly, they started talking in Spanish. Totally inconspicuous. We all have secrets or information we do not want others to know but a thought came to mind. We’re the only species of animals that has such a comprehensive vocabulary and language which allows us to communicate in extremely intricate manners with just the spoken word. And on the flip side, it’s ironic that while language exists so that we can communicate, it also exists as a way to hide information and create barriers between people that speak different languages.

According to the, there are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. However, about 2,000 of those languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers. The most popular language in the world is Mandarin Chinese. There are 1,213,000,000 people in the world that speak that language. 10 of these languages are spoken by about 50% of the people on Earth. Since there are so many languages with such a small quantity of speakers, multiple languages go extinct a year. Do you think it is possible for the world to converge into one language?
